WordPress backups that finish, on any host.
Portage is a WordPress plugin for backup, restore and migration. It keeps going on cheap shared hosting, checks every backup it makes, and undoes a restore that goes wrong.
Portage is in development and not yet released. This site will carry the download and the documentation once it is.
What Portage does
- Backs up your database and files on a schedule or whenever you ask, and carries on from where it stopped when a host cuts a request short.
- Writes standard ZIP and SQL files, so you can open an unencrypted backup without Portage. Encryption is optional, and on by default for Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive.
- Restores in stages with a health check, and puts the old site back automatically if the new one breaks.
- Moves a site to a new host or domain and rewrites its addresses safely.
- Sends backups to storage you choose: your own server, S3 compatible storage, SFTP, WebDAV, Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive.
Google Drive, and what Portage can see
When you connect Google Drive, Portage asks for one permission: to create files, and to see, change and delete only the files Portage itself created. Google calls this the drive.file scope. Portage cannot open, list or change anything else in your Drive.
Portage uses that permission for one thing: to keep your site's backups in a folder named Portage Backups, and to read them back when you restore. The files stay in your Drive, where you can download or delete them yourself.
You can connect in two ways. Portage's own sign-in takes one click, then a confirmation screen that names the site being connected. Or you can register your own Google app and leave Relei out of the connection entirely. Either way, backups travel from your site straight to your Drive and never pass through Relei. The privacy policy sets out exactly what does pass through Relei's sign-in service.
Portage's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
